Our story
How Gemilang Labs came to be
Gemilang Labs started with a straightforward observation: small business owners across George Town were hearing a lot about AI, but most of what was out there felt built for large companies with IT teams and dedicated budgets. The tools were useful, but the path to using them well was unclear — and the pace was rarely kind.
The people behind Gemilang Labs had spent years working inside small businesses and alongside them. They understood the reality: the owner who handles accounts on Tuesday mornings, answers customer messages between deliveries, and writes the week's social posts late at night. That person does not need a lecture on AI trends. They need something that fits into a Wednesday, not a three-month rollout.
So in early 2024, Gemilang Labs was set up in George Town with that specific person in mind. The name — gemilang, meaning bright or distinguished in Malay — reflects the belief that small businesses can do excellent work when they are given the right kind of support, not the flashiest technology.
Today, the team works with shopkeepers, service providers, and founders across Penang, helping each one find the handful of AI tools that genuinely fit their week. Every engagement begins with listening. Most end with a business owner who feels more settled in their day, not more burdened by it.

Who you will work with
Nadia Rashid
Founder & AI Consultant
Nadia spent a decade helping SMEs in Penang manage their operations before realising that the right AI tools could quietly handle a good portion of that work. She leads every new client engagement personally.
Arif Khoo
Workflow & Process Specialist
Arif maps the working patterns of a business before suggesting a single tool. His instinct for spotting where time gets lost has saved clients hours each week without adding any new complexity.
Siti Tan
Data & Insights Lead
Siti turns overlooked spreadsheets and scattered records into dashboards that business owners actually check. She has a rare ability to make numbers feel calm rather than overwhelming.
How we work
Standards we hold ourselves to
Client-led pacing
We do not push timelines. Every engagement moves at the speed the business owner is comfortable with, and we check in regularly to make sure that is still the case.
Data privacy first
Before we suggest any tool, we assess how it handles customer data. We align with Malaysia's Personal Data Protection Act 2010 and explain data practices clearly to every client.
Clear documentation
Every engagement ends with written guidance. Clients should feel confident managing their tools independently, not dependent on us to keep things running.
Plain language always
We do not use technical jargon unless we explain it first. Every recommendation is described in terms that make sense to a business owner, not a software engineer.
Responsible tool selection
We only recommend tools that are stable, well-supported, and suited to the scale of a small business. We do not promote tools based on trends alone.
Honest scoping
If a particular tool or service would not genuinely benefit a client's situation, we say so. We would rather lose a project than recommend something that does not fit.
Our approach
Practical AI integration for small businesses in Penang
Small businesses across George Town, Butterworth, and greater Penang are increasingly curious about AI — but many find the available information either too broad or too technically demanding to act on. Gemilang Labs exists to fill that space with something concrete and kind.
Our work covers three main areas: conversational AI helpers for customer-facing businesses, workflow support for owners carrying too many roles, and data clarity for those whose records have outgrown their current setup. Each service is delivered with a defined scope, a fixed price in Malaysian Ringgit, and a handover that leaves the business owner in control.
We draw on experience with local business culture, an understanding of Penang's mix of heritage retail, food service, professional trades, and digital services. We know that many of our clients switch between Malay, English, and Hokkien in a single conversation, and we build that kind of flexibility into every recommendation.
Our values are simple: start by listening, move at the client's pace, leave things tidier than we found them. We believe AI works best when it fits into a business quietly, doing useful work without demanding attention it has not earned.
